Dominican Republic

Emily went to the Dominican Republic through the Long Valley Presbyterian Church. She had gone on 2 previous trips to Appalachia which she felt were really influential for her. When the church started the Dominican Republic trips she thought it was great because she could help people and practice her Spanish (she had a Spanish minor.) She was so moved by the children on the trip- she thought they were so beautiful. She had their pictures in her room and on her computer. One little girl had a special effect on her. Ariel was about 9 years old and Emily felt so sad for her because she was so pretty and sweet and had little hope of achieving a good education and success in life. The next year Emily could not go on the trip with the church but Maggie (one of the leaders) brought back letters to Emily from the children, especially Ariel. She cried when she read them and said I have to go back next year and she did.

Kate and I went last summer to see where she worked and what she did. The children all remembered her and called her Emily Special. The church that she worked on and helped put in the water purification center held a special church service to honor her and Kate and I while we were there. Kate wrote about it last year.

Kate is joining me this year to the DR on a trip that focuses on health care. I will be leading a trip on which 65 nurses will join me in holding nurse run clinics, condcuting healh education classes for informal leaders in Santo Domingo and on Batayes. We are going from August 4-9.

The group that runs these trips is called the Foundation for Peace. You can find more information on www.foundationforpeace.org . The foundation works through the churches in helping them meet the needs of the people of their congregations. They build churches, schools, water purification centers, latrines, and health centers in the poorer sections of the DR. If you would like to join us we are listed as trip #9, August 4-9. The cost is $650 plus airfare- you will not spend any money while you are there. The living conditions are interesting- it is not air conditioned and there is only cold water in the shower. There are bunk beds but most people drag their mattress on to the floor to sleep. The meals are great as they are prepared by the local women. We will only be focusing on health care but the other trips do building, digging, education and health.

I hope this answers your question. Feel free to email me at especchio@cse.edu if you want more info or ask Kate.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Emily.

Eileen (Mama Specs)
