Sugar & SPICE
Everyone has shared really great things about Emily, but it makes me smile to think of the competitor that Emily was because the fire she brought onto the field was the same kind she brought into life.
I was Emily’s Big Brother in Phi Sigma Pi and when we sat down and thought about it, we guessed we had first met briefly at an intramural soccer game. It was no secret that Emily loved the game nor was it a secret that I sucked at it. When I got out on the field I tried to play like an enforcer and I checked some guy on her team. She promptly stuck up for her friend and gave me an earful.
By next semester, that spitfire was my Little. I loved to watch her compete and took a lot of pride in the fact that she would be one of only two girls that played in our alumni football games. Again, with the same passion. She even remarkably tackled the 230lb+ train that is Pete Gingrich. She was fearless. After a play like that I congratulated her saying something like “Good job cutie” to which she said, “I’m not cute asshole!” You could imagine the “wows” that got from the other players, but once we both got on the sideline- all that melted away and she said with a hug, “Now you can call me cute.”
Whenever I think of Emily, I first think of the laid back (almost surfer) way she talked or the way her laughs seemed to hiccup out of her. But I like to stop and think about these little snapshots of fire and sass because it reminds me of all her different sides.
