Road trips to nowhere
One night, when suburban New Jersey just had nothing left to offer us, Emily and I decided to go on a road trip. I asked her where we should go and she gave me a one-word answer: "straight."
I laughed, but when I came to pick her up, we departed on the first of what would become a tradition of nighttime roadtrips down Route 513. We would drive through the small towns that line that country road, waxing poetic about life, sharing funny stories, and endulging in the occasional sing-along to whatever song resonated on the car stereo. Emily always told the best stories, most of which ended with me laughing so hard that I was unable to breathe.
These "straight" roadtrips were quite possibly the only times in her life that Emily stuck to the path. She was a free spirit who lived life to the fullest. I truly believe that she lived more life in 21 years than most people can fit into 80.
I was blessed to know Emily for 15 years and I had the opportunity to watch her develop into the beautiful, intelligent, and confident woman that she was. From Dorothy DelGuercio's dance classes to Sam's soccer pre-season sessions to repairing homes in Appalachia, we shared countless experiences that will be with me forever.
Compassion. Optimism. Generosity.
Emily, you taught me so much. I couldn't have asked for a better friend.
Te echo de menos...
Love you always and forever,
Meredith

[I love this picture because we look so put together, even though we were about to depart on quite the adventure. We took it as we were getting ready for New Year's Eve in New York City. I still question whose great idea it was to allow Emily and me to run free on the streets of NYC and trust us to find our way to my brother's apartment in Hoboken at 4 o'clock in the morning.]
